March/April 2018

Dear Parents and Teachers,

Spring is in the air! That means that plans are in the works for Teacher Appreciation, Open House and our annual Hoedown! Contact your room parent for more information about teacher appreciation and myself for Hoedown.

If you are following us on Facebook you saw a few videos of the 4th-6th grade Rube Goldberg machines. Student groups used their physics and engineering skills to build a machine out of everyday objects to pour cereal. The winning machines from Rancho will be set up at the SVUSD STEAM Expo on Sat 3/24 at LHH to compete in the district wide competition. All are welcome to attend!

To help parents identify and navigate child mental health issues SVUSD is holding a parent workshop at the district board room (25631 Peter A. Hartman Way Mission Viejo, CA 92691) on 3/13 at 6:30 pm. As a PTA we will be holding a Kindness Week in April with programs and activities to promote positive relationships, inclusion and compassion. Our philanthropy project for the week will be collecting gently worn shoes benefiting US Veterans. So don't toss any during your spring cleaning!

Our students and community really came together last month when we lost one of our own, sixth grader Shelby Portnoff. Thank you to Summer Cannon, Thorey Bauer, Pearl Hopkins, Lauren Montanchez, Mrs. Anderson and the office staff for your help with coordinating our ribbon memorial and communication with the Portnoff family. It was very moving to have the whole school take part in the ribbon memorial and to be able to share that time with the Portnoff family and friends. We know that Shelby is missed every day at Rancho especially by her friends, classmates, teachers, and all that knew her. As a PTA we are exploring opportunities to create a permanent memorial through our Gifts to Rancho Committee.

As winter turns in to spring, we all know that summer is not far behind. A new PTA Board will be elected at our next PTA General Meeting and plans for next year will be starting.  If you have a great idea or a favorite event and would like to lend a hand now is the time to let us know. We will be looking to fill open chair positions, figure out our calendar and budget. More information will be coming but one thing we would like everyone to think about is how YOU can be involved. We have many wonderful programs at Rancho but we need new hands to help out to ensure that these programs continue. Even if you can't take on a "big" job, by volunteering the time you do have helps prevent burnout for other PTA volunteers. With teamwork we can accomplish many great things!

With appreciation,

Tina Fellers, President
